Call for manuscripts/applications to a training course on:

Scientific Writing and Communication
with focus on underutilized crops research

Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique, Kenya, Uganda

The International Foundation for Science (IFS), Bioversity International (as part of the CGIAR Research Programme: Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security Programme CCAFS), RUFORUM, and the African Network for Agriculture, Agroforestry and Natural Resources Education (ANAFE), will conduct a training workshop on Scientific Writing and Communication with focus on underutilized crops research. The course will be held in Nairobi, Kenya on 12-16th September, 2011.

Young scientists from Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique, Kenya and Uganda are hereby invited to submit a manuscript and apply for participation in this training course.

Applicants eligible for this call should:

  • Be citizens of Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique, Kenya or Uganda
  • Be national scientists attached to a university, research institution or a research oriented and not-for-profit NGO
  • Be under 40 years of age
  • Have at least a Master's or equivalent degree
  • Be involved in research on regional priority NUS species

We particularly welcome applications from female scientists

This is an intensive, 5-day course, during which participants will learn about:
Writing technical communication, inc. reports, theses, scientific papers, reviews; scientific papers for publication in international peer-reviewed journals, preparing and giving different forms of oral communication for different audiences, preparing posters, writing proposals, communicating in science (conferences, preparing applications, reviewing the work of others), analysing and presenting technical data using graphical methods, designing research projects, managing projects for scientific and international organisations, matters of style in technical communication, communicating to non-experts. Postdoctoral Fellowships for Training in Cancer Research 2012-2013
Applications for training fellowships in 2012-2013 are invited from junior scientists wishing to complete their training in those aspects of cancer research related to the Angency's mission: to coordinate and conduct both epidemiological and laboratory research into the causes and prevention of cancer. Disciplines covered are: epidemiology (including genetic and molecular), biostatistics, bioinformatics, and areas related to mechanisms of carcinogenesis including molecular and cell biology, molecular genetics, epigenetics, and molecular pathology. The is emphasis on interdisciplinary projects. Fellowships must be taken up by 30 November 2012.

TWAS Fellowships: 2011 Call for Applications
Postgraduate, postdoctoral, visiting scholar and advanced research fellowships available to scientists from developing countries. TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world, is now accepting applications for its postgraduate, postdoctoral, visiting scholars and advanced research fellowship programmes. The fellowships are offered to scientists from developing countries and are tenable at centres of excellence in various countries in the South, including Brazil, China, India, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, Pakistan and Thailand. Eligible fields include: agricultural and biological sciences, medical and health sciences, chemistry, engineering, astronomy, space and earth sciences, mathematics and physics.
