Prof. Dr. H. C. Huub Lelieveld: Honoring a great friend while still ALIVE

Huub Reflecting on a friendship spanning over 15 years, I was privileged to be invited by Prof. Huub to the Global GHI conference in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Despite the event's postponement to June 2025, the dedication of the organizers in keeping us informed was commendable. Prof. Huub's passion for uniting scientists from diverse backgrounds to delve into the crucial realm of food safety and legislation was evident from the outset of our acquaintance at the IUFoST Congress.
As the second GHI Conference approached in June 2025, unforeseen circumstances prevented my physical presence in Rotterdam, leading me to deliver my speech virtually. Despite our reduced international travel, Prof. Huub's commitment to advancing the Global Harmonization Initiative (GHI) for Food Safety and Legislation remains unwavering. His seamless transition of leadership to Dr. Diana Bogueva exemplifies his foresight and dedication to the cause.
Dr. Huub's remarkable persona, characterized by his ability to rally individuals towards a shared goal, has garnered him numerous accolades, culminating in a prestigious Lifetime award presented by the Rotterdam City Mayor on behalf of the King of The Netherlands at the recent GHI Conference.
Since GHI's inception in 2007, Dr. Huub's visionary leadership has fostered a community of members and ambassadors, including the appointment of Dr. Bernard Oloo from Egerton University as Kenya's GHI ambassador. Dr. Oloo's current stewardship underscores the enduring impact of Prof. Huub's mentorship and guidance.
The comprehensive tribute to Dr. Huub encapsulated in his illustrious career spanning seven decades is a testament to his altruism and benevolence. Beyond his professional achievements, Prof. Huub's philanthropic endeavors in supporting over the education of 57 young individuals in Kenya through our organization, Rural Outreach Africa reflect his compassion and generosity.
I am happy and feel honored to have him as a friend.
Long live Prof Huub.

During the congress there was a totally unexpected surprise that left me stunned / flabbergasted: The Mayor of the city where I live, had come to Rotterdam to present me a royal decoration, something that I had never thought of and would never have expected. So, suddenly I was an "Officer in the Order of Oranje Nassau". It left me speechless. All congress participants where present and they made lots of pictures. The speech of the Mayor explained why I got the declaration and for your information, I have attached it as a pdf, as send to me, afterwards”.
