Subject: Norman Borlaug Award for Field Research and Application

Dear Ruth:

As a personal tribute to Dr. Norman Borlaug during the centennial year of his birth, I am writing to urge that you nominate a worthy candidate for the 2014 Borlaug Award for Field Research and Application, Endowed by the Rockefeller Foundation.

This prestigious award, now in its third year, recognizes an accomplished individual under the age of 40 who has clearly emulated the extraordinary traits demonstrated by Dr. Borlaug as a young scientist working in the field to discover and implement solutions to eliminate global hunger.
Nominations are due by June 30. Information on the past two winners is available at www.worldfoodprize.org/borlaugawardee. The nomination submission procedure and criteria are available at www.worldfoodprize.org/borlaugfieldaward.

The 2014 recipient will take part in our October 15-18 World Food Prize Borlaug Dialogue International Symposium and related special celebrations honoring Dr. Borlaug’s hunger-fighting legacy, and will receive the $10,000 Award during a ceremony at the World Food Prize Hall of Laureates.
Dr. Borlaug was passionate about and dedicated to “inspiring the next generation.” He never missed an opportunity to talk to children and youth about how they could make a difference in the lives of the world’s poor and hungry. He guided and mentored many of today’s leading international scientists, policy experts, and extension workers. Even though he is gone, you can help continue Norman Borlaug’s vision by nominating up-and-coming scientists and extension professionals for this special honor. The “Borlaug Field Award” is intended to uphold his legacy and inspire the next generation of food and agriculture researchers to pursue ever-ambitious goals to ensure food security for all.

The below flier provides additional information (which we hope you will share with your network of contacts). Please note that nominations previously submitted will remain under active consideration without any further action on the part of the nominators.

Thank you for joining with us to honor Dr. Borlaug and continue his legacy as we recognize and inspire the next generation.
Sincerely,

Ambassador Kenneth M. Quinn
President, The World Food Prize
