About SAJE

Research carried out in Africa in most cases is not acceptable by international journals based outside Africa . There was urgent need for establishment of a body to promote quality, sustainable production and publication of African-based journals. Society of African Journal Editors (SAJE) was launched on 16-17 th December 2004 at the Lenana Mount Hotel, Nairobi-Kenya. The launch was hosted by Rural Outreach Program ( ROP ), a non-governmental organization which publishes the African Journal of Food, Agriculture, Nutrition and Development (AJFAND) headed by Hon. Prof. Ruth K. Oniang'o. The society was formed following a proposal that was put forward during the 1999 Zanzibar conference (Arusha IV) on ‘Strengthening Scholarly Publishing in Africa' to form a Pan-African Association of Scholarly journal Editors. The overwhelming response from the editors on scholarly journals on the continent led to a formation of a ten-member working committee in October 2002. This worked towards laying a strong foundation for the formation of SAJE, which culminated in a draft constitution. The constitution was adopted as a SAJE document.
