A Tribute in Honour of a Colleague and Friend

The Department of Food Technology and Nutrition, University of Nairobi is deeply saddened by the untimely death of Prof. Muroki who until his demise was an Associate Professor in the department which he joined in 1976. At the time of his death, Nelson was the acting Head of the Applied Nutrition Programme and also the acting Chairman of the department. Nelson had a high standing as a teacher and researcher, wise and generous in sharing his ideas. As his students would say ‘his advice was invaluable’ whenever it come to research issues. Nelson, was always so gracious and positive and his professionalism will be sorely missed. But even more, we will miss a man of humility, kindness and compassion.

We live in a changed and changing world where violence is nearer now for more people than ever before. We all need to work in a disjointed world for a better one. Our wishes and prayers for the academic community as well as his family and for all his many friends is that we play our role, however small, in achieving this aim.

It is with a heavy heart that I ask you to forward this e-mail to the family of Professor Moroki. I have had the privilege of knowing him over the years. He had a high standing as a researcher and, together with a Kenyan student now doing his PhD, I visited Moroki's house to discuss various aspects of food technology about a year ago. Moroki was wise and generous in sharing his ideas and his responses to ours. As a result of this meeting, Victor Owino was able to focus his research toward improving the dietary intake of children of HIV infected mothers in Zambia. Moroki's advice was invaluable. On the times we met he was always so gracious amd positive and his professionalism will be sorely missed. But even more, we will miss a man of humility, kindness and compassion. Please convey my sincerest condolences to the family. We live in a changed and changing world where violence is nearer now for more people than ever before. We all need to work in a disjointed world for a better one. My wishes and prayers for the Moroki family and for all his many friends is that we play our role, however small, in achieving this aim.
