Prof. Joseph Allotey is a
Member of AJFAND International Advisory Board, AJFAND Oversight Editorial Board, AJFAND Reviewer, Author and FRIEND

He is an associate professor of Entomology was born on 15th March 1951 in Accra, Greater Accra Region, Ghana. Joseph is a vastly experienced entomologist with three degrees to his credit: Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from University of Ghana, Masters degree in Zoology from the same University and a PhD in Applied Entomology from the Rivers State University of Science and Technology in Nigeria. Joseph started his career in 1978, as a Biology Lecturer in Accra Polytechnic in Ghana, before joining the University of Ghana as a Demonstrator in the Zoology Department. From here, he moved to the Department of Biological Sciences as a Lecturer in Zoology and Applied Entomology in 1982, rising to the level of Senior Lecturer before joining the University of Botswana, with great humility as a Lecturer. That notwithstanding, Joseph climbed the ladder again to the post of a Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences. Other institutions where Joseph has worked include: Lecturer in Zoology and Applied Entomology, Department of Biological Sciences, Rivers State University of Science and Technology. Currently, he is an external examiner for University of Malawi and University of Zimbabwe. Other teaching assignments include: Course Coordinator and Principal Lecturer in Insect Ecology for PhD students at the International Centre for Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE), Kenya, between 1986-1990.

Joseph has shown exemplary commitment to community service. From 1983 to 2002 he mounted scientific exhibitions during important functions in universities at international and trade fairs and farmers days. He has also been a member of the farmers’ day, and a member of the research team for project appraisal at the UNHCR refugee camp in Botswana. From 1995to 2002, he organized exhibition/practical demonstration on prevention of post harvest losses due to insect pests.

In research, he has a vast wealth of experience, having attended over 31 conferences/workshops, with 41 paper and 3 posters presentations. He has 64 publications consisting of one book, 2 chapters, 32 peer reviewed journal publications, 7 technical bulletins, 2 booklets, 6 published abstracts, 12 conference proceedings, 1 technical support, 1 electronic publication- CD ROM. In professional qualification service, he has edited reading materials (volume 1, 2, and 30) on Insect Ecology, reviewed Scientific papers in 5 international Sciences Journals, a member of the editorial board of two international science journals, member of the International Advisory Council of TODA Institute for Global Peace and Policy Research. Joseph is also a member of 10 professional associations.

In his teaching and research career, Joseph has received a number of international awards such as the “Current Status of the Mophane Worm Industry; Impact on the Population and Implication in the Future” in 1990. The American Biographical Institute (ABI) named him “Man of the Year 2000”, he has also received the 2000 “Outstanding Intellectual of the 21st Century: in Entomology, awarded by the International Biographical Centre (IBC) on 20th November 2000. Further, Joseph has received two research awards: The Vice Chancellor’s Best Research Prize: of Naira 1,000.00 for Academic Staff in Biological and Agricultural Sciences from Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, Nigeria on 7th April 1990 and was the recipient of the Commonwealth Foundation Grant in 1989. He is a key AJFAND reviewer and advisor.
