DR. ALEXANDRA DATA HART

Alexandra Hart is an Associate Professor in the Department of Food
Science & Technology, Rivers State University of Science &
Technology, Port Harcourt, Nigeria. She joined the service of the
University in 1981 as an Assistant Lecturer. From there she went
on to the University of Southampton, UK on a study fellowship where
she obtained a Doctorate degree in Human Nutrition in 1987, working
with Professor R.F. Grimble on “the Effect of Methylxanthines
on Lactational Performance”. On return to her present employment,
she became Head of Department from 1990-1995, combining teaching
and research activities with administrative responsibilities and
was Sub-Dean, Faculty of Agriculture from 2003-2005. With her wide
experience in research, she has several scientific publications
in reputable national and international journals. She is a member
of several professional associations and currently serving on the
editorial boards of the Nigerian Journal of Nutritional Sciences
and the Delta Agriculturist.
She has served as external examiner in University of Nigeria Nsukka
and University of Agriculture, Makurdi both in Nigeria. Her current
research activities include nutrition/food consumption studies,
heavy metals in foods of aquatic and terrestrial origin and milk
yield from the West African dwarf goat. Research activities outside
the University include active participation in several national
food consumption and nutrition surveys. She is currently serving
as a resource person on Women-in Agriculture project with the Agricultural
Development Programme in Rivers and Bayelsa States in Nigeria. She
was one time National Vice President of the Diabetes Association
of Nigeria, in which she has made immense contributions to the management
of diabetes in Rivers State in particular and Nigeria at large.
Prior to her present appointment with the University she had obtained
a four year diploma in Dietetics from Leeds Polytechnic UK and worked
as Dietician in David Lewis Northern Hospital, Liverpool and Whithington
Hospital, Manchester, United Kingdom from 1970-1972.
On return to Nigeria in 1972, Dr. Hart set up the Dietetic Department
of the General Hospital, Port Harcourt (now University of Port Harcourt
Teaching Hospital), combining this with lecturing in dietetics at
the Schools of Nursing and Midwifery, Port Harcourt. She later returned
to Britain on study leave for a Postgraduate Diploma in Human Nutrition
at Queen Elizabeth College (now Kings College), University of London.
After returning home, in quest of further academics, she went back
to the University, this time the University of Ibadan in Nigeria
for a Master of Science degree in Human Nutrition. From thence she
resigned and joined the University to satisfy the urge for academics
and has continued there to date.
Clearly, Dr. Alexander Hart is a role model for the many young women
scholars who wish to pursue a career in the academic field. We at
